About

Sam Amos

TrashDollys is the alias of Sam Amos, a dancer and filmmaker based in Bristol, UK.

Sam began dancing at the age of nine, inspired by the freedom and physical nature of Breaking. He dedicated a life to developing the distinct movement style for which he is known for today. Breaking served as a catalyst and an outlet for his creativity, later sparking an interest in filmmaking at the age of nineteen. Filmmaking provided new creative perspectives and allowed him to use movement as a tool to explore themes and tell stories through short films.

“I remember watching a short film as a kid that featured Breaking captured from above in black and white, set to slow classical music. We typically associate Breaking with very high energy or in a competitive setting, but this film presented it in a completely different light. This was what sparked my interest in filmmaking.”

In 2014, Sam formed TrashDollys, focusing on short films that place movement at the heart of visual storytelling. Under the TrashDollys banner, Sam has also directed and choreographed a number of live dance works since 2015, some of which have toured internationally. Through TrashDollys, Sam aims to continue to challenge the creative possibilities of dance and film while connecting with wider audiences.

“Getting certain projects off the ground often comes with lots of challenges, especially when they require a specialised team, a specific venue, or additional funding. While all these things are essential for some projects, many short films I've produced have been made independently or with just one other person. I love the autonomy it has given me in that respect. Whenever I feel inspired to shoot something, I just grab my camera and head out, regardless of whether I’m alone or with others.”
